Day 2--Out of California

What a difference in scenery, from the verdant Central Valley of California to the colorful, but barren, high desert of Arizona.

M P, our mark on the desert

We left Porterville at about 9:00, after a good night's sleep and some good conversation with Raghbir.  Through Bakersfield and over the Tehachepi Pass, we finally picked up I 40, which, we discovered, almost parallels the old Route 66.
Best onion rings in Barstow, maybe California.
Ate at a hamburger joint in Barstow, where they served these onion rings.  They were fresh, crunchy, hot, hot, hot, and really good.   We ate lunch in Barstow at about noon, and then drove through Needles, over the Colorado, and as far as Kingman.  Arrived here about 5:45, probably our longest day of travel on the trip...we hope!

Best rib eye in Kingman, found
at the Dambar Steakhouse.
Both Pat and I like the colors, shapes and look of the desert with its great scenery, but certainly would not want to live here.
