Morocco 2019 Day 6

If this is day 6 it must be Saturday, Jan 5th.  Really hard to keep track of time and overcome jet lag and keep up with a hectic schedule.

Wool for carpets
Today we went to the Medina early in the morning for classes. The first visit was to a carpet weaving artisan where we were shown how the looms are set up for weaving.  I learned how to tie the knot used in the carpet.

Cutting a tile
Thinking in reverse is interesting

Next visit was to a tile workshop where they take finished tiles and break them into pieces for use in mosaic tile work.  After demonstrating how the tiles are broken, we made a 4" tile using the pieces we'd seen cut.  The back was set with plaster of paris, so we departed with a finished tile.  I think I'll frame mine and use it as a trivet.

Lunch was at a very nice outdoor restaurant called Rotisserie de la Paix.  Still cold, but at noon not too bad.  (Morocco is turning out to be colder than I expected, and even the locals say it has been very cold.  At least I deal better with cold than hot, as you can always put on more clothes.)  Nice lunch of salad, tagine chicken, vegetables, pomme frites, with chopped fresh fruit in a light syrup for dessert.

After this we returned to the Souk for a visit to a carpet showroom. Gorgeous rugs but I didn't buy one, although tempted.

Snake oil salesmen had nothing on this guy
The haul from the Berber Pharmacy
Next to the Berber Pharmacy.  There we had a fast-paced sales pitch about the various uses of spices, herbs, oils and teas.  Entertaining but expensive.  Got argan oil and saffron, ras el hanout, etc etc etc.

FINALLY went back to the hotel and had time to lie down, then attempt to catch up on this blog, which means starting to write it.

Pottery seen in the Souk

Scarf anyone?
